Guidelines for attending First Communion Mass

Our Lady and St Peters First Holy Communion Mass: Notes for parents and guardians

Dress code

Children/parents/guests are asked to wear smart-casual clothing. This is clothing you would (for example) wear to a celebratory lunch. You can Google examples of ‘smart-casual dress’ if you are unsure. As a basic guide: shoulders and knees should be covered and there should be no jeans or tracksuit joggers.

Girls tend to choose white/cream dresses but this is in no way mandatory. If your child would like to wear gloves they need to be removed to receive communion which they may find a bit fiddly if they are nervous.

The important thing to remember is that there is no need to buy a special outfit that will only be worn once!

Before Mass

Children should be brought to the OLSP church hall 15 minutes before the start of Mass. This is the hall in which the initial FHC meeting was held. You enter the main gate of the church and take the path that runs down the left hand side of the church rather than go into the building.

During Mass

First Holy Communion is one of the seven sacraments of the church and, as such, is a very
sacred event. During the Mass we ask that guests refrain from chewing gum, using mobile phones or
taking photographs. You are more than welcome to take as many photos as you like inside the church after the
Mass. Fr Jack makes time for this in his schedule if you would like a photo with him also.

Please remind any guests that the Eucharist is reserved for those who are in full communion with the Catholic faith. They are encouraged and welcome to cross their hands over their chest and receive a blessing from Fr Jack in lieu of this.

There is a collection during the Mass with monies raised going towards resources for next year’s First Holy Communion group. Any donations towards this are gratefully received.
